The Birdcage Gift Shop & Tea Bar

(Contributed by )

The Birdcage is a relatively new gift shop and tea bar conveniently situated near Moederkerk. The shop is filled with home decorations and confectionaries. Should you choose to sit down there are several tables inside, as well as a beautifully secluded courtyard at the back. With weekly specials on light meals, a tastefully ornate interior as well as efficient and friendly service, the Birdcage is definitely worth a visit.

My Experience:

On this Wednesday I, along with my mother and sister, looked for a place at which we could have an afternoon drink. From the road my attention was grabbed by the sign outside the shop, advertising a pancake with caramel, banana and cream, topped with chocolate sauce for R15. We entered and, walking through the building, were quite amazed at the serenity. We sat down in the courtyard and as it was near closing time, were the only customers there. I thoroughly enjoyed my decadent pancake, complemented by the soothing taste of vanilla tea. My sister ordered a piece of cake, while my mother had a muffin and cappuccino. We all agreed that the afternoon could not have been better spent.

Tips:

  • They offer a vast array of flavoured teas – be sure to try one.
  • Ask the waiter for their specials of the week.
  • Take some time to browse through the store and admire all the interesting articles on sale.

  • This is really a very nice place, their sandwiches are also a winner.

Very child friendly, in the courtyard they have a lovely shaded sandpit with a slide and things for children to play with. The staff are very accomodating and arranged a special spot to change baby in too.  Probably the most child friendly cafe I have been in since my baby was born 15 months ago

Today they had a caramel and banana pancake on special. It was absolutely divine.  On the negative side I found their chairs a bit uncomfortable.
