I’ve known about Gideon and his pancakes for almost 12 years now. On the first occasion we stilled lived in Velddrif and just came to Franschhoek for the day. Everyone recommended Gideon pannekoek. At that stage his restaurant was situated on the main road where French connection can now be found. In 2003, 3 years later, we moved to Franschhoek (not just for his pancakes, although at that age it would have been reason enough for me to move). Unfortunately Gideon left the village shortly after and we were left with only overpriced and mediocre pancakes in Franschhoek.
Fortunately 7 years later he decided to come back to Franschhoek. With the rise of prices he was forced to hire a place in the ‘industrial’ part of Franschhoek. Despite this he immediately picked up where he left off and once again he was the talk of the town. The word travelled fast and thanks to many positive reviews by overly satisfied customers on TripAdvisor he became the number one restaurant out of 48 in Franschhoek. This helped him to move back to the main road next to Col’caccio within 11 months.
On my latest visit I brought a friend (who soon after became my girlfriend) to his restaurant. The food was delicious as always. We shared a creamy chicken in white wine sauce pancake and a caramelized apple with ice cream pancake for desert. For drinks I ordered the blueberry shake and she ordered the home made ice tea.
He treated us like we were his most loyal customers. He remember me from my two or three visits, asked how my brother (a more frequent visitor) was doing, offered a discount and even gave us free coffee at the end.
This is one of those things you have to experience before you die and it is definitely worth the drive from anywhere in South Africa.
We since moved to Brackenfell and I just had to pick up something from the pharmacy next to the pancake house for my mother. I couldn’t resist going to Gideon. I ordered the chocolate ice cream and nuts pancake and a freshly made beetroot, carrot and apple juice. Last mentioned was surprisingly refreshing on this very hot summer’s day and the pancake was delicious as always. I just had to eat quickly before then sun ‘ate’ all of the ice cream.
- If you go as a group let everyone order something different so that you can taste all of the pancakes.
- The same goes for the drinks.
